Got Milk… And Cookies!

January 29th, 2010

Loaded up Cinema with cookies and milk in my mind. Aiming to do some serious sub-poligonal displacement and overload that GI with some HDRI’s and everything turned up to max basically! Lol!

It only cost me over an hour of rendering… although the milk is too dark and has some weird artefacts the rest I like! I’m gonna do some photoshop post processing just to get a more polished image.

I wanted loads of detail so I started off with some primitives which were sculpted onto using Mudbox. It was fun messing about with clay again, albeit being digital.

After texturing, lighting and rendering… I had some cookies. Yum!

Gake No Ue No Ponyo

December 29th, 2009

I only just got to watch Ponyo On The Cliff, a 2008 Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Gibli film that’s about this fish girl who fell in love with a boy called Sosuke… she unleashes some strange powers to become human, but also almost destroys the world in the process. Now this is not a review, just an expression of how awesome I though it was.

I’m a big fan of Ghibli films because they’ve always inspired my imagination. They are beautifully animated adventures taking you to far away places that you could only visualize as a child. The desensitized adult in me is transformed back into a kid in a matter of seconds… I never want the films to end, it feels like I could live there forever. My bags were packed when the title showed!

Totoro and Spirited Away both had this same impact on me and Ponyo is no different. Such cute drawings and love / happy themes usually make me go meh, but the execution is so precise, the characters so strange but relatable and animation so believable, I just can’t help but fall in love… again!

The thing that blew me away, was the action sequence with Ponyo surf-riding the fish and just water everywhere, I mean the water in this anime is so cool… you want to dive in and swim… no, run on it! Really, who needs rendered CG particles that simulate physics and fluid dynamics? I can tell you that Ponyo doesn’t!

Bottom line, I want to make stuff like that… It’s too magical and peaceful, yet dangerous and could potentially be disastrous if it wasn’t for the happy ending! Ponyo is just awesome!

Some Painted Artwork

December 22nd, 2009

Said before that I was sick of tablets, but they have their uses. Unlike drawing, something I’ll always prefer to do with a pencil and paper, painting is too messy and slow for me not to be done digitally! So I guess I’m going back on my word? Nah, that was animation, this is painting…

Scuzzball is a comission from The Rage of the Stage Players inspired by my black and white piece Evil Teddy. I promiss I have nothing against, stuffed animals!

And while they have been many projects talked about on this blog, some that didn’t get finished… the next image is a concept artwork for my next film that’s too awesome in my head.

Still in pre-production, and I can’t say anything about it yet, but here’s the main guy (codenamed Moto) sitting on a rock/hill.

Planning to hand animate it, not clear on how to go about doing the backgrounds yet.

Camera Projection Experiment

October 20th, 2009

Wanted to give this Matte Painting thing a quick go. Went and found a breathtaking photo by Macindows on InterfaceLIFT…

… and then made it all 3D like. Just need to fix the over-exposure near the sun, bad textures on the close up and some shitty depth at the far end.

New Camera, D5000

October 18th, 2009

Woo hoo, something to take some quick snaps, textures, sunsets, girls etc… it can shoot 720p video too, so will help for some quick experiments and stuff! Woo hoo!

As you can see, I’m crazy about depth of field effects… this calls for a third woo hoo!
